Thermae Bath Spa Travel Guide

Thermae Bath Spa — Britain's only natural geothermal hot spring bathhouse, grandly reopened in 2006. The New Royal Bath was designed by Pritzker-level architect Sir Nicholas Grimshaw, perfectly blending honey-coloured Bath stone with an all-glass curtain wall. The water here originates from the same underground hot springs as the Roman Baths, with a constant temperature of 35-46°C, rich in over 40 minerals including calcium, magnesium and sulphates. From the open-air rooftop pool overlooking the honey-coloured skyline of this UNESCO World Heritage city, to relaxing in the Minerva Bath's massage jets, to experiencing the Roman steam room, Georgian steam room, infrared sauna and ice chamber in the Wellness Suite — this is a thermal healing journey spanning 2,000 years.

Highlights

Start your afternoon by entering the spa from Hot Bath Street in Bath city centre. Collect your smart wristband, robe and slippers at reception, then take the lift to the top floor — greeted by Bath's most iconic sight: the open-air Rooftop Pool. At 35.5°C, the natural thermal water steams within the open-plan glass-walled enclosure, with views stretching across Bath Abbey's spire, the curved silhouette of the Royal Crescent and the rolling Somerset hills beyond. As dusk falls, city lights illuminate the skyline, with steam and twilight weaving a magical atmosphere. Descend next to the Minerva Bath, an indoor pool with flowing curves featuring massage jets and bubble loungers. Then step into the second-floor Wellness Suite, experiencing in sequence: the Roman Steam Room (45°C with herbal aromatherapy), Georgian Steam Room (tea rose fragrance), Infrared Sauna (55°C deep heat therapy) and Ice Chamber (ultrasonic crushed ice cooling) — completing an ultimate contrast therapy circuit. If time permits, book a private session at the Cross Bath, a Grade I listed Georgian building offering an exclusive open-air thermal soak.

Attractions
New Royal Bath & Rooftop Pool
Designed by Pritzker-level architect Sir Nicholas Grimshaw and opened in 2006. The building sits on a honey-coloured Bath stone base wrapped in a 360° all-glass curtain wall, hailed as "a symphony of glass, stone, light and water." The Rooftop Pool is Britain's most photographed spa scene — 35.5°C natural geothermal water steams in the open-air pool, with daytime views of Bath Abbey's spire and the Royal Crescent, while at night city lights reflect dreamily through the vapour. The pool features bubble massage loungers and neck massage jets, with sun loungers poolside for relaxation. Awarded "Best City Spa" by Good Spa Guide in 2025.
Minerva Bath & Wellness Suite
Named after the Roman goddess of health and wisdom, the Minerva Bath is the largest indoor thermal pool in the spa, with flowing curvilinear forms complemented by majestic Corinthian colonnades. Water temperature is a constant 35.5°C, featuring massage jet areas, a lazy river and neck massage nozzles. Above it, the Wellness Suite offers a multi-sensory healing space: the Roman Steam Room pays homage to ancient Roman bathing traditions with 45°C herbal steam and a Sulis-Minerva mosaic portrait set into the wall; the Georgian Steam Room fills with tea rose fragrance, its walls adorned with murals of Bowood House gardens; the Infrared Sauna provides 55°C dry heat penetrating deep into muscles and joints; the Ice Chamber delivers rapid cooling via ultrasonic crushed ice; and the Celestial Relaxation Room creates a cosmic immersive experience with a star-lit ceiling and loungers. All facilities are open to guests aged 16 and above.
Cross Bath
Originally built in 1783, this Grade I listed Georgian building represents the most historically sacred part of Thermae Bath Spa. The Celts once worshipped the goddess Sulis here, and the site underwent several reconstructions from the medieval period through the 18th century. The oval open-air thermal pool maintains a temperature of 34°C, sourced from the 46°C Cross Spring natural hot spring, rich in 42 minerals including sulphates, calcium and silica. Classical alcove seating surrounds the pool with a central fountain, and Adam-style decorative elements remain beautifully preserved. Private hire sessions accommodate up to 10 people (including champagne and fine nibbles), or join the limited Tuesday group immersion sessions (£40/person for 90 minutes). This is Bath's quietest, most serene thermal corner.
Springs Café Restaurant & Afternoon Tea
Located on the ground floor of the spa, Springs Café Restaurant blends Georgian architectural heritage with modern design aesthetics, serving freshly prepared dishes using local ingredients. The menu includes fresh sandwiches, artisan wraps, daily soups, light mains and homemade desserts (brownies, sticky toffee pudding), alongside speciality coffees, selected teas, fresh juices and Somerset cider. Highly recommended is the "Tea for Two" afternoon tea set (£92/two persons Monday to Thursday), featuring a three-tier stand of sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam, homemade cakes and a pot of selected tea. Time spent dining at Springs does not count towards your spa session duration, making it the perfect refuelling stop between soaks.
