The York Ghost Merchants Travel

The York Ghost Merchants — the world's only shop dedicated entirely to selling "ghosts," and the most enchanting must-visit destination on York's Shambles. Founded in 2019 by Angus McArthur and David Bloodworth at 6 The Shambles, the shop occupies a building originally constructed in 1780, with oak-panelled walls and antique display cabinets recreating the 18th-century Georgian style. Inside, candlelight flickers as over 600 handmade terracotta ghosts smile from the walls — each one completely unique in expression and texture. From the £9 Little Ghost to the limited edition Black Box collectibles, every ghost carries the thousand-year-old legend of York as "Europe's Most Haunted City" — locals believe they absorb bad luck and protect their owners. A half-day in-depth tour covers the flagship store, the ghost selection ritual, and treasure hunting at The Dispensary branch.

Highlights

Queue early at 6 The Shambles (arrive by 9:45am recommended), enter at 10am as the black-cloaked staff usher you into the candlelit 18th-century shop. Among over 600 handmade ghosts lining the walls, touch with your hands and feel with your heart to find the one that "calls to you" — each ghost has a unique expression and texture, cool to the touch like ceramic. Once chosen, place it on the mini stage on the wall for a keepsake photo, and the staff will carefully package it in a travel box printed with The Shambles shop illustration, lined with dark red velvet, with a peephole on the lid that reads "Boo!" If you dislike queuing, walk 5 minutes to The Dispensary branch in St Anthony's Garden, where you can browse 500 ghosts amidst birdsong and greenery — a quieter atmosphere with shorter waits.

Attractions Arrangement
The Shambles Flagship Store & Candlelit Window Display
Located in a 1780 Georgian building at 6 The Shambles, with oak-panelled walls, antique display cabinets and a fireplace recreating an 18th-century shop atmosphere. Only candlelight and the ticking of a grandfather clock create the mysterious ambiance. Over 600 handmade ghosts are on display, with the widest selection including limited editions and rare finds — one of the longest-queued shops in York. Staff dressed in Edwardian costumes enthusiastically explain the story behind each ghost.
Ghost Selection Ritual & Photo Wall
The most unique experience at The York Ghost Merchants. Place your chosen ghost on the mini stage (peephole) on the wall to take its "identity photo" — the box lid features a "Boo!" peephole design that turns the packaging itself into a souvenir. Staff demonstrate the ghost's "crying" easter egg — drop water on its eye socket and it becomes a teardrop. Each ghost is wrapped in paper printed with an 1852 map of York (large size) or a gold-edged "Boo Box" (small size) — maximum ritual satisfaction.
The Dispensary Branch & St Anthony's Garden
The second branch opened in July 2023, located within St Anthony's Garden, backed by York's city walls and adjacent to a 15th-century church and medieval guildhall. Surrounded by green shade and birdsong, it offers a peaceful contrast to the hustle of The Shambles. Around 500 ghosts on display, including Original Ghosts, Little Ghosts and Phantoms, with queue times typically only one-third of the flagship store. Card payment only, no cash accepted.
The Guild Room Workshop & Ghost Making Experience
A reservation-only experience space located in a 1735 Georgian townhouse at 31 St Saviourgate, originally a parish school classroom, now serving as the ghost-making workshop and showroom. Seven full-time Ghostmakers produce each ghost by hand using the traditional "ghostmaker's dozen" method (14 per batch). Guests can tour the workshop, browse over 500 rare ghosts, and participate in making their own unique ghost during a 45-minute session. Reservations required via the official website calendar, with limited availability each session.
